Indoor Hitting Drill: 4-Station Tee Work Progressions for Batting Cages
Why Tee Work Still Matters in 2026
Every major-league hitter in the country still hits off a tee. It's not a beginner drill — it's the foundation of mechanical consistency. For youth baseball players in Des Moines training indoors during Iowa's long winters, structured tee work inside a batting cage is the single most effective way to build bat speed, improve contact point awareness, and develop muscle memory that transfers directly to live at-bats.
At The Training Yard, our four professional-grade indoor batting cages give hitters the space and equipment to run these progressions year-round — no weather delays, no canceled practices.
The 4-Station Tee Drill Rotation
This 30-minute rotation is designed to fit inside a single batting cage rental. Each station runs 6–7 minutes with a 30-second transition. You'll need a batting tee, a bucket of baseballs, and your game bat.
Station 1: Inside Pitch — Hands First (7 Minutes)
Setup: Place the tee on the inside corner of the plate, slightly forward in the zone (belt to thigh height).
Focus: Drive hands through the ball, keeping the barrel tight to the body. The goal is to pull the inside pitch with authority — not push it the other way.
Reps: 20–25 swings. Between every 5 swings, pause and dry-swing to check hand path.
Common Mistake: Dropping the back shoulder. Keep your shoulders level through the zone on inside pitches.
Station 2: Middle-Middle — Line Drive Machine (7 Minutes)
Setup: Tee centered on the plate at belt height.
Focus: Hit line drives up the middle. This station is about consistent barrel-to-ball contact and reinforcing your natural swing plane.
Reps: 25–30 swings. Every rep should feel identical. If you're popping up or rolling over, slow down and reset your load.
Key Cue: "See the ball hit the bat." Literally watch the barrel make contact.
Station 3: Outside Pitch — Opposite Field (7 Minutes)
Setup: Tee placed on the outer third of the plate, slightly deeper in the zone (back hip to belly button).
Focus: Stay inside the ball and drive it to the opposite field. Let the ball travel deeper before committing your hands.
Reps: 20–25 swings. This is the hardest station — most youth hitters try to pull the outside pitch. Fight that instinct.
Drill Variation: Place a net or target on the opposite-field side of the cage to give hitters a visual aiming point.
Station 4: High-Low Combo — Adjustability (7 Minutes)
Setup: Alternate the tee height every 5 swings — belt-high, then knee-high, then letters-high.
Focus: Train your body to adjust to pitch location without changing your timing or load. This builds the in-game adjustability that separates good hitters from great ones.
Reps: 20 swings total (5 per height, rotating through twice).
