Winter Indoor Practice Plan for Youth Baseball & Softball Teams (60-Minute Template)
The Iowa Winter Training Problem
Every youth baseball and softball coach in Des Moines knows the frustration: your season starts in April, but you haven't had a real outdoor practice since October. That's six months of lost development. The teams that show up sharp on opening day are the ones that trained indoors all winter.
At The Training Yard, we've hosted hundreds of team practices on our 60' × 100' indoor turf. This practice plan template is built specifically for our space — but it works in any comparable indoor facility.
Before You Start: Setup & Equipment
Players: 12–15 athletes (ideal for a single youth team roster) Space: Full 60' × 100' turf with batting cages retracted, or a combination setup with 2 cages active + open turf Time: 60 minutes total Equipment needed:
- 2 buckets of baseballs/softballs
- 4–6 cones for station markers
- Batting tees (provided by The Training Yard)
- Gloves, bats, helmets
The 60-Minute Practice Template
Minutes 0–10: Dynamic Warm-Up & Throwing (10 min)
Dynamic stretching (5 min): Jog baseline-to-baseline, high knees, butt kicks, lateral shuffles, arm circles, leg swings. Keep it moving — no standing around.
Throwing progression (5 min): Partner up. Start at 30 feet, move back to 60 feet. Focus on mechanics: step toward target, elbow above shoulder, follow through.
Coaching tip: Set a timer. Youth players will throw for 20 minutes if you let them. Keep it tight.
Minutes 10–35: Station Rotations (25 min)
Split your team into 3–4 groups of 3–5 players. Rotate every 6 minutes with a 30-second horn/whistle transition.
Station A — Batting Cages (Live Hitting) Use 2 active cages for live hitting. Machine pitching or coach front-toss. Each hitter gets 8–10 swings per rotation.
Station B — Tee Work / Soft Toss (Open Turf) Set up 2–3 tees along the turf sideline. Players work through the tee work progression drill or partner soft-toss.
Station C — Fielding / Ground Balls (Open Turf) Coach hits ground balls from 40 feet. Fielders work on approach, glove presentation, and throwing to a target. Rotate between shortstop, second base, and third base positions.
Station D — Baserunning / Agility (Open Turf) Set up cones for baserunning reads: primary leads, secondary leads, steal breaks, and rounding bases. Mix in agility ladder work if time allows.
Minutes 35–50: Team Defense / Situational (15 min)
Bring everyone together on the turf. Run through game situations:
- Runner on first, ground ball to shortstop — turn two
- Runner on second, base hit to outfield — relay throws
- Runner on third, less than two outs — infield fly, squeeze bunt
Minutes 50–58: Competitive Drill (8 min)
End practice with something fun and competitive. Options:
- Knockout: Line up and hit off the machine. Miss = sit down. Last hitter standing wins.
- Relay Race: Teams of 4, sprint to cone and back. Losing team does 10 push-ups.
- Situation Pressure: Game-speed at-bat with runners on. Hitter has to execute (move the runner, sac fly, etc.)
Minutes 58–60: Cool Down & Huddle (2 min)
Quick stretch. Coaching recap: one thing the team did well, one thing to work on next time. Dismiss.
